iPhone 4S is a significant upgrade.

In case you missed it, Apple announced the iPhone 4S. There were outcries of disappointment from the Apple fan base because this device was not called iPhone 5. I would argue this upgrade is in fact a big upgrade to the handset in the places where it counts most: the CPU, internal memory, and GPU. The only thing not upgraded in the 4S was the screen and the case. The current iPhone already has the nicest screen of any phone on the market now. So the only way it gets better is if the display gets bigger.

I am disappointed in my fellow geeks and their assessments. There comments were essentially judging a book by its cover. Or more analogous, judging a computer system by the monitor and the case. Let’s face it, these smartphones are handheld computers. My current iPhone has more processing power than my first Macintosh circa 1989. The new 4S will have a dual core CPU and a dual core GPU. (Remember when we all had a single CPU and GPU in our laptop/desktop computers?) Multi core processors are standard even in the cheapest computers. This will deliver a huge improvement in performance. Faster load times, better graphics, faster photos, etc. Overall a more responsive experience.

Also the biggest difference between the iPhone and all other smartphones is the software. iOS delivers the smooth, refined experience we iPhone users come to expect. It is also the secret sauce that makes an iPhone, an iPhone. New features are being rolled out in iOS 5 and if you have at least a 3GS, then you will get most of these new features. But if you get the new 4S, you will get all of new features. Most importantly voice command through Apple Siri. Even the iPhone 4 will miss out on this feature because it simply does not have the CPU and memory requirements to run this impressive feature. Watch how it works here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html. Simply put: WOW! This is like Star Trek. Remember when Capt Kirk would say ‘computer, blah blah blah’ and he’s get a response? Now my iPhone can do this? Sign me up.
